Paulpietersburg
General Information
Paulpietersburg is a small, pretty town nestling in the foothills of the Dumbe Mountain - a big, flat-topped, triangular mountain in the middle of flatlands territory, popular with Para gliders and hikers and named after the wild dumbe fruit which grows on its slopes. Paulpietersburg is said to be the healthiest town in South Africa, because of its excellent climate and the naturally high quality of its water which has attracted two spring-water bottling plants to the area.
The roots of Paulpietersburg lie in a piece of the then Transvaal Boer republic surveyed by HJ Maarschalk in 1888. The demarcated land was named in honour of Boer president Paul Kruger and Voortrekker hero Pieter Joubert.Paulpietersburg played its part in the military shaping of the region. The peace treaty that ended the Anglo-Boer war was signed at the nearby Egode River, while the Anglo-Zulu war site of Ntombe is 30km away.Paulpietersburg is only 3.5 hours' drive from Johannesburg and Durban and popular with visitors because of the nine hot and cold mineral water pools at the Natal Spa just 9 km outside of town. The spa is fed by a natural, hot spring that surface on the southern approaches to the 1 536m Dumbe Mountains. The invigorating and healing qualities of hot mineral water are well documented. It boasts "triple waters" which means they contain carbonates, chlorides and sulphates and the temperature at source is 40℃.
